Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate – Simba Camp

  • Altitude: 1,950 m → 2,650 m

After registration at Rongai Gate, the trek begins through farmland and pine forest before entering wilderness zones. The trail is gentle and quiet, offering a peaceful start to the climb.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp

  • Distance: ~7 km

  • Walking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Altitude: 2,650 m → 3,450 m

The trail ascends steadily with wide views across the northern plains of Tanzania and Kenya. Vegetation thins as you enter moorland terrain, and the sense of isolation becomes more pronounced.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp – Kikelewa Camp

This day involves a shorter but steeper climb. The landscape becomes more rugged, with dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak. The slower pace supports acclimatization.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp – Kibo Hut

Cross the alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is barren and lunar‑like, emphasizing the importance of hydration and slow pacing.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

The summit attempt begins around midnight. Trekking steadily, you reach Gilman’s Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for rest.
