Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking – 8‑Day Lemosho Route

Machame Camp > Shira Camp > Lava Tower – Barranco Camp > Karanga Camp> Karanga Camp > Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Overview

  • Duration:10 days 9 nights
Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking via the Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful, best‑paced, and most successful route to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Approaching Kilimanjaro from the remote western side, the Lemosho Route offers trekkers a quieter start, gradual altitude gain, and an exceptional variety of landscapes.

Over eight carefully planned days, climbers pass through dense rainforest, open moorland, vast alpine deserts, and icy glacial zones before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). The longer duration allows the body to adapt naturally to altitude, significantly increasing safety and summit success. This makes the Lemosho Route ideal for both first‑time climbers and experienced trekkers who value comfort, scenery, and proper acclimatization.

Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Walking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Altitude: 2,100 m → 2,650 m

After registration at Londorossi Gate, the trek begins through lush rainforest. This area is rich in birdlife and towering trees, with a chance of spotting monkeys along the trail. The walk is gentle and designed to ease the body into trekking while enjoying the natural beauty of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp

  • Distance: ~8 km

  • Walking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Altitude: 2,650 m → 3,500 m

The forest slowly gives way to heath and moorland vegetation. As you climb higher, views begin to open up across the Shira Plateau. The air feels cooler and the terrain more expansive, marking your transition into Kilimanjaro’s higher zones.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp

  • Distance: ~7 km

  • Walking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Altitude: 3,500 m → 3,850 m

Today’s trek is relatively gentle, allowing your body to continue acclimatizing. Walking across the Shira Plateau, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Mount Meru in the distance and Kilimanjaro’s Kibo Peak rising ahead.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

  • Distance: ~10 km

  • Walking Time: 6–7 hours

  • Altitude: 3,850 m → 4,600 m → 3,950 m

This is one of the most important days for acclimatization. You climb steadily to Lava Tower, reaching over 4,600 meters, before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” method greatly improves your body’s ability to adapt to altitude.

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Walking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Altitude: 3,950 m → 4,000 m

The day begins with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non‑technical climb that rewards trekkers with incredible views. Afterward, the trail undulates across ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.

Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

  • Distance: ~17 km

  • Walking Time: 10–14 hours
